Run Clubs in Austin

Austin's running scene revolves around Lady Bird Lake. The 10.1-mile Hike-and-Bike Trail loop is the spine of the city's running culture, with crews meeting at every trailhead from 5:45 a.m. onward most days.

When to run: October through April is peak. May through September is hot and humid; runners shift to 5 a.m. starts or after 8 p.m. The Trail has water fountains every mile but limited shade in stretches.

Running neighborhoods

Downtown / Lady Bird Lake

Most clubs meet at one of the Trail's bridge entrances (Pfluger, Lamar, Congress, Pleasant Valley). The default Austin running address.

East Austin

Festival Beach and the eastside extensions of the Trail. Post-run brunch culture concentrated here.

South Congress / Bouldin

Trail access from the south shore plus Auditorium Shores. Closer to the city's brewery and coffee-shop circuit for post-run hangs.

Hyde Park / North Loop

Quieter residential running streets plus access to Shoal Creek Trail running north from downtown.

The routes locals actually run

Practical context, not a full route map. Combine these with the route detail pages below for turn-by-turn maps.

Lady Bird Lake Hike-and-Bike Trail

10.1 miles full loop

Crushed limestone, mostly flat, water and restrooms at every bridge. The default Austin long-run venue. Pfluger Bridge cuts the loop into a 3-mile west and 7-mile east option.

Walnut Creek Greenbelt

12+ miles of trail

North Austin's trail system. Shaded, soft-surface, technical in stretches. Best summer alternative to the Trail's sun exposure.

Barton Creek Greenbelt

7+ miles of trail

Limestone-bottom creek trails southwest of downtown. Technical and rocky; not for first runs. Best after rain when the creek is running.

Shoal Creek Trail

4 miles north of downtown

Paved north-south corridor from Lady Bird Lake to north Austin. Shaded in stretches, popular for tempo work.

Annual races to put on the calendar

Recurring races local runners build their year around. Specific dates change; the months and vibes don't.

Austin Marathon

February

Hilly course through downtown, South Congress, and the eastside. Cool morning, often the city's biggest race weekend.

3M Half Marathon

January

Point-to-point from Arboretum to downtown; net downhill. The fastest half on the Texas calendar and a popular Houston/Austin Marathon prep race.
